How to Save a GIF From Twitter (X)
Last updated:
To save a GIF from Twitter, you copy the link of the post and paste it into an X video downloader. The X app has no save option for GIFs.
The file you get is an MP4 video that loops, not a .gif file. That surprises many people. This article explains why it happens, gives the steps, and shows how to convert the file when you need a real .gif.
Why X Has No Save Option for GIFs
On most websites you can press and hold a GIF and save it as an image. On X that menu does not appear, because the GIF is not shown as an image.
X's developer documentation lists three types of media in a post: photo, video and animated GIF. It also says a media item can have playback variants in different formats, and its example variant is an MP4 file.
In our tests, every GIF post we checked returned a single MP4 file. Tech publications such as Trusted Reviews and Laptop Mag confirm the other half: X offers no direct way to save a GIF in its app.
Save a Twitter GIF: Steps
- Open the post in the X app or on x.com.
- Tap the share icon and copy the link of the post. On a computer, copy the address from the address bar.
- Open the downloader, paste the link and select Get video.
- Select the download button. For a GIF post, the tool shows one button, labelled GIF.
The browser saves the file to your Downloads folder. On an iPhone, that folder is inside the Files app.
MP4 or .gif: What You Get
The saved file is the MP4 that X stores. It has no sound, and video players repeat it when looping is turned on.
An MP4 is the better format in most cases. It plays on every phone and computer, and you can post it again on X, where it behaves like a video.
A real .gif file matters only where video is not accepted, for example in some chat apps and forums that take images but not video.
How to Turn the MP4 Back Into a .gif
A video-to-GIF converter changes the MP4 into a .gif file. Trusted Reviews describes the method with the free online converter EZGIF: you upload the MP4, select Convert to GIF and save the result.
Expect a larger file. The GIF format stores animation less efficiently than MP4, so the same clip takes more space as a .gif.
X's Limits for GIFs
These limits explain why GIFs on X are short and small. X's developer documentation gives them for uploads:
- File size: up to 15 MB
- Resolution: up to 1280 × 1080 pixels
- Frames: up to 350
- Per post: one animated GIF
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a saved Twitter GIF have sound?
No. A GIF has no sound track, and the MP4 that X stores for it is silent as well.
Can I choose the quality of a GIF?
No. X stores a GIF as a single file, so the tool shows one button.
How do I save a GIF to my phone's gallery?
The steps are the same as for a video. The guide on getting a Twitter video to phone storage covers iPhone and Android.
Can I use a saved GIF anywhere I like?
Not always. Many GIFs are clips from films, shows or other people's videos, and those stay protected by copyright. Sharing one privately is different from publishing it.
