Why a Twitter Video Will Not Download
Last updated:
A Twitter video will not download when the tool cannot see the post, or when the post has no video file. A downloader reads a post the way a visitor without an account does, so anything hidden from that visitor is hidden from the tool.
Six causes cover almost every failure. A separate section explains why X's own Download video option can be missing.
Cause 1: The Account Is Protected
Posts from a protected account are visible only to the followers the owner approved. X's Help Center adds that protected posts do not appear in search engines.
A Twitter video downloader has no account and follows nobody, so it cannot open these posts.
Cause 2: The Post Was Deleted or the Account Suspended
A deleted post is gone from the author's account, from timelines and from X's search results. X shows the notice This post is unavailable in its place. The same notice covers deactivated accounts.
Posts of a suspended account are hidden behind a notice as well. In both cases the link still exists, but nothing is behind it.
Cause 3: The Post Is Age-Restricted
X hides media that is marked as adult or sensitive content from some viewers. Its policy states that users under 18, and viewers who have no birth date on their profile, cannot view the marked content.
A downloader is in the same position as a viewer without a profile. It cannot confirm an age, so it cannot read these posts.
Cause 4: The Post Has No Video
A post with only text or photos has no video file. The tool saves videos and GIFs, and it reports an error when a post contains neither.
Cause 5: It Is a Live Broadcast or a Space
A Space is a live audio conversation, as X's Help Center defines it. It is sound, not video, and it has no MP4 file.
A live video broadcast is a stream that is still running. There is no finished file to save while it is live.
Cause 6: The Link Is Not a Post Link
A downloader needs the link of one post. A link to a profile, a search or a list contains many posts.
A post link contains the word status followed by a long number. Open the post so it fills the screen, then copy the link again. Links from x.com and twitter.com both work.
Why X's Own Download Video Option Is Missing
This is a different problem from a failing downloader website. X's option appears only for Premium subscribers, only for videos posted from July 25, 2023 on, and only when the author allows it.
The article on X Premium downloads goes through each condition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I download the second video of a post?
Open that video on X and copy the address. It ends in /video/2 or a higher number, and the tool then saves that video.
The tool says X did not answer. What now?
Wait a minute and try again. This happens when X is slow to respond.
Can a downloader open a post if I follow the protected account?
No. A link-based tool does not use your account, so your follow does not help it.
How do I save a video once the link works?
The guide on how to save Twitter videos has the steps for both phones.
