Facebook HD vs SD Video: Which File to Download
Last updated:
HD and SD are two quality levels of the same Facebook video. HD, high definition, means a picture that is 720 pixels tall or more. SD, standard definition, is anything below that. An HD file is sharper and larger; an SD file is softer and smaller.
This article explains what the two files are when you download a Facebook video, why only one of them appears for some videos, and how to choose.
The Two Files Facebook's Player Offers
Facebook does not keep one copy of an uploaded video. It compresses the upload and stores several versions, so it can send a smaller one to a slow connection and a sharper one to a fast connection.
The embedded player that Facebook provides for public videos exposes two of these versions as finished files. Each one is an H.264 MP4 with the picture and the sound in the same file. In our tests, the HD file is 720p.
These are the two buttons you see when you download Facebook videos with this site's tool.
HD vs SD at a Glance
| HD | SD | |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 720p | Below 720p |
| File size | Larger | Smaller |
| Format | H.264 MP4 | H.264 MP4 |
| Sound | In the same file | In the same file |
| Best for | Watching on a large screen, editing | Saving storage, sending in a chat |
The exact size depends on the length of the video. The tool shows an estimated size on each button, calculated from the bitrate and the length, so you can compare the two before you download.
Why Only SD Appears for Some Videos
Facebook cannot add detail that the upload never had. When a video was uploaded in a low resolution, Facebook stores no HD version of it, and the player offers the SD file alone.
In that case the SD file is the best copy that exists. A tool that offers a larger file for such a video has only stretched the same picture.
Why There Is No 1080p or 4K File
A video can play on Facebook at more than 720p. Facebook delivers those higher resolutions as two separate streams, one for the picture and one for the sound, and the player joins them while you watch.
A finished file with both parts exists only up to HD. Building a 1080p file means downloading both streams and merging them into a new file. This site's tool delivers finished files only, so 720p is its highest quality.
Which One to Pick
- Choose HD to watch on a tablet, computer or TV, or to edit the video. Editing compresses the picture again, so start from the sharpest copy.
- Choose SD when storage or mobile data is limited, or when the video will be sent in a messaging app that compresses it anyway.
- For a talking video, such as a speech or a lesson, SD is usually enough. The sound is in both files.
Both files work the same way on a phone. The guide on how to download Facebook reels shows where each file lands on iPhone and Android.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HD on Facebook 720p or 1080p?
HD starts at 720p, and 1080p is often called Full HD. The HD download file from Facebook's embedded player is 720p in our tests.
Do the HD and SD files both have sound?
Yes. Each file is a single MP4 that contains the picture and the sound. Nothing has to be merged or converted.
Can an SD video be turned into HD?
No. Enlarging an SD video makes the file bigger but adds no detail. If Facebook stores only an SD version, that is the best copy available.
Why does neither button appear?
Then the tool could not read the video at all, usually because it is not public. See the reasons for Facebook download not working.
