Facebook Video Download Not Working: Causes and Fixes

Last updated:

A Facebook video fails to download for one of six reasons: the video is not public, it is in a private group, it is a Story or a live broadcast, it was deleted, the link points to something else, or Facebook did not answer in time.

The first reason explains most failures. This article shows how to check each one.

1. The Video Is Not Public

A link-based downloader has no Facebook account. It sees what a visitor who is not logged in sees, and nothing more. Facebook's Help Centre lists six audiences for a reel or video:

AudienceWho can see the video
PublicAnyone, including people off Facebook
FriendsOnly the owner's friends on Facebook
Friends exceptThe owner's friends, except the ones they choose
Specific friendsOnly the friends the owner chooses
Only meOnly the owner
CustomAn audience the owner defines

Only Public includes people off Facebook, so only a public video can be downloaded. The audience is shown at the top of the post, next to the time it was published. You can watch a friends-only video because you are logged in as a friend. The tool is not.

Age-Restricted Videos

A public video can still be closed to visitors without an account. For a video marked as 18+ content, Facebook shows a logged-out visitor the message "Log in to view this 18+ content" in place of the video.

A link-based tool is in the same position as that visitor. It receives the login message, not the video, so an age-restricted video cannot be downloaded without an account.

A Quick Test: The Embed Option

Facebook gives a second way to check. On a computer, open the video, click Options and look for Embed. Facebook's Help Centre notes that you only see this option if the audience is set to Public.

This test matches how the Facebook video downloader on this site works: it reads the same embedded player. If Facebook offers no Embed option for a video, no public player exists for it.

2. The Video Is in a Private Group

Facebook groups are either public or private. Meta's description of a private group is that only members can see who is in the group and what they have posted.

Being a member lets you watch the video in your own account. It does not make the video visible to a tool that has no account.

3. It Is a Story or a Live Broadcast

Since September 2025 every video posted to Facebook is a reel, with two exceptions that Facebook names: Stories and live videos.

  • A Story is temporary, and its link is not a video link. This site's tool does not read Stories.
  • A live broadcast that is still running is a stream. Facebook has no finished file for it until it ends.

A finished live video does not stay forever either. Under a policy Meta introduced on February 19, 2025, a live video can be replayed, downloaded or shared for 30 days and is then removed automatically.

4. The Video Was Deleted or Its Audience Changed

A link keeps its shape after the video behind it is gone. If the owner deleted the video, or changed its audience from Public to something narrower, the link returns nothing.

Facebook describes the same effect for embedded reels: when the audience changes from Public, the embed shows a message that the reel is no longer available.

5. The Link Points to Something Else

The link has to lead to one video. A link to a profile, a Page, a group or a photo post contains no single video file.

Open the video itself, then copy its link again. The guide on how to copy a Facebook video link lists the link formats that work.

6. Facebook Did Not Answer in Time

Sometimes the video is public and the link is right, and the request still fails. Facebook's servers answer slowly during busy hours. Wait a minute and try again.

What Not to Do

Some websites promise to download private Facebook videos if you log in through them, paste your cookies, or install a browser extension. Each of these gives a stranger access to your Facebook account.

A safe downloader asks for a link and nothing else. If a video is not public, the honest answer is that a link-based tool cannot reach it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download a friends-only Facebook video?

Not with a link-based tool. A friends-only video is visible only to logged-in friends of the owner, and the tool has no account.

Can I download a video from a private group I belong to?

No. Posts in a private group are visible only to its members, and membership belongs to your account, not to the tool.

Why can't I download my own Facebook video?

Facebook's Download reel option covers reels you posted after September 2025, in the mobile app only. The guide on how to download Facebook reels has the steps.

The video downloaded, but only in SD. Why?

Facebook stores no HD version of a video that was uploaded in low resolution. The article on Facebook HD vs SD explains the two files.
