Facebook Save Video vs Download: Where Saved Videos Go

Last updated:

Save video on Facebook adds the video to a list inside your account so you can watch it later. It does not put a file on your phone or computer. A download does: it creates an MP4 file that stays on your device.

This article explains where saved videos go, what a saved video depends on, and when you need a file instead.

What Save Video Does

Facebook's Help Centre describes the feature in one line: you can save reels or videos you see on Facebook to easily view them later. While watching, you tap Options, then Save reel or Save video.

The result is a bookmark. Facebook keeps a pointer to the original post, and the video itself stays on Facebook. That is why a saved video never shows up in the Photos app or in a gallery.

The Save feature is not new. Meta announced it on July 21, 2014, for links, places, movies, TV and music.

Where Saved Videos Go

Facebook's Help Centre gives this path in the app:

  1. Tap Menu, then tap your name.
  2. Tap Reels.
  3. Tap Saved to see the reels and videos you saved. Liked shows the ones you liked.

The Help Centre adds that your saved and liked lists are only visible to you. The list belongs to your account, so it is the same on every device where you are logged in.

A bookmark depends on the original post. When the owner deletes the video, or changes its audience so that you are no longer included, the saved entry has nothing left to open.

When Facebook Itself Gives You a File

Facebook offers a real download in one case only: your own reel, posted after September 2025, in the mobile app. The option is named Download reel. For reels and videos created by other people, the Help Centre says plainly that you cannot download them.

The steps and the audio limits are in the guide on how to download Facebook reels.

How to Keep a Real File

For a public video someone else posted, a link-based tool creates the file. You copy the link of the video, paste it into the Facebook video downloader, and choose HD or SD.

The file is an H.264 MP4 with sound. It plays offline and opens in editors such as CapCut and iMovie. Saving a video for your own viewing is personal use; posting it again needs the creator's permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Save video put the video in my gallery?

No. Save video adds a bookmark inside Facebook. Nothing is written to the Photos app on iPhone or to the gallery on Android.

Can other people see the videos I saved?

No. Facebook's Help Centre states that your saved and liked lists are only visible to you.

Why did a saved video disappear?

A saved video is a pointer to the original post. If the owner deleted the post or changed who can see it, the saved entry can no longer open it.

Can I download a video from my Saved list?

Facebook has no download button there. If the video is public, open it, copy its link and use a link-based tool. If the tool returns an error, see the reasons for Facebook download not working.
